f11 (full screen mode) in most Browsers

When you are on the Internet, sometimes the window is smaller than you would like. To activate full screen mode press the function key at the top of your keyboard (f11). this will make the window full size. Press it again and it will go back to the orginal size that you were in.

Ctrl-0 in Internet Explorer (reset page size to 100%)

On one of my previous tips we talked about how to increase and decrease the page size on the Internet. How do you go back to 100% page size after you are done playing? CTRL-0 (That is a zero not the letter). If you hold down the CTRL key and type the number 0, it will return the page to 100%.

Ctrl-D in Internet Explorer

While you are on Internet Explorer, if there is an internet address that you want to keep for the future, you can easily save the address as one of your favorites. You can save this in 2 ways. One way is to go up to the tool bar and choose Favorites-Add to Favorites, or you can hold down the Ctrl key and type the letter “D” (Ctrl-D). This will save the address in your favorites so you can come back later with one click.

Shortcut icons – part 1

We are going to deal with desktop clutter today. Are there too many icons on your desktop? Many you don’t use? Look at those- if they have a little white arrow on the bottom left, you can delete them without worrying about deleting the application. These are Shortcuts to launch the application, not the application itself. You can always get to the application by clicking on the Start Key and go to All Programs and select from there.

Have you ever had a document with a long list of bullets and you wanted to change the order of those bullets, but didn’t know how to, except by retyping the list? Well here is a shortcut to let you change the order easily and quickly. First highlight the bullet or bullets you want to move, then hold down both the Shift and the Alt keys and use the up or down arrow key to move the bullets.

Shift+f3 (Toggles Case)

Have you ever been typing and looked up and found that your caps lock was on and everything was in capital letters? Well here is a quick fix. First highlight the text that needs to be changed, then if you hold down the Shift key and tap the f3 key it will toggle through 3 possibilities of text capitalization: Initial Caps, ALL CAPS, and lower case. This works with most Microsoft products.

f4 key (repeat previous action)

The f4 key is located on the top row of your keyboard. When you hit the f4 key it repeats the previous action taken. Whatever that action might have been. For instance, you need to make several elements within a document italics. Once you do the first word or section in italics, just select the next word or section and hit f4 and repeat. This works in Word and PowerPoint and may work in other software packages as well.

Ctrl – Z (Undo)

We have talked about several ways to “Do” things. What do you do when you change your mind or do something incorrectly and you want to “UNDO” what you have done? Ctrl-Z is how you “UNDO”! In many software packages, you can hit Ctrl-Z several times to undo previous actions.

Ctrl-B (Bold), Ctrl-U (Underline), Ctrl-I (Italics)

Last week we talked about selecting text. Now that you have selected it, lets format the text. Ctrl-B (Bold), Ctrl-U (Underline), Ctrl-I (Italics). Once the text is selected, hold down the Ctrl key and press the letter “B” it will bold the text. If you press “B” once more it will unbold the text. The same rule applies to “U” to underline and “I” to italicize the text.

Today’s tip has to do with selecting text. This works in all Microsoft products and many other software packages as well. Selecting text to edit, format, move or delete can be easy with click 1,2,3. When you need to select a word, or a paragraph all you need to do is: Click once on the word to place your mouse inside the word, click a second time and the word is selected, click a third time and the entire paragraph is selected. If you want to select the entire sentence, hold down the Ctrl key and click anywhere in the sentence.
